Russian forces failed to take three key areas in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk amid heavy shelling, Ukrainian military officials said Saturday, adding that the Russians were “not succeeding” and that the “fighting continues.”

The announcement comes alongside Western assessments that despite a new focus on the eastern region of Donbas, Moscow is still struggling with morale and supply concerns. The Pentagon described only “plodding progress” after fierce Ukrainian resistance.

The slow advance gives little sign that the conflict will end soon. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said there was a high chance of negotiations breaking down because of “Moscow’s playbook on murdering people.” Meanwhile, Western governments continue to funnel weapons to Ukrainian forces.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov walked back a number of recent comments about nuclear war, telling a Saudi-owned news channel that Russia does not consider itself to be at war with NATO. However, Russian nonproliferation official Vladimir Yermakov said Saturday that strategic dialogue with the United States has been “frozen” until after the conflict in Ukraine is over.

Here’s what else to know

  • A local police chief told The Washington Post that Ukrainian and Russian forces at the besieged Azovstal steel plant in the southern port of Mariupol have stopped fighting in the hope of establishing a safe corridor for the evacuation of civilians. New satellite images appear to show the sprawling complex largely in ruins.
  • Ukrainian police have been informed of more than 7,000 missing people since the war began — a total that the country’s Internal Affairs Ministry called an “unprecedented” toll.
  • The Russian central bank projected that the economy would shrink by 8 to 10 percent this year as the country grapples with Western sanctions.
  • Cities near the front line, including Kramatorsk in Donetsk, have been largely abandoned. Officials in Kramatorsk told The Post that the population has fallen from 200,000 to 40,000, with mostly elderly people remaining…..
